Today, we began class with New Fiction Friday presentations. Then, we read excerpts from Emerson's "Self-Reliance" and Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience." Students engaged in a partner pairing activity which involved matching definitions to literary/poetic devices, and students worked with their partners, crafting CEI paragraphs, supporting claims, based on their readings of the essay excerpts. Today, students completed their Emily Dickinson Round Robin group poetry analysis assignment. Then, students were given the remainder of the class period to workshop their Walt and Emily Blind Date projects.

Today, we completed our PowerPoint, notes, journals, and class discussions on the Transcendental movement. Then, the class was introduced to their Emily Dickinson Round Robin and their Walt and Emily Blind Date projects.

Today, we began our discussion of the Transcendental movement. Students viewed a PowerPoint presentation and took Cornell notes on the material. Students were also prompted to complete mini journal entries, based on the content of the PowerPoint. These mini journals guided the classroom discussion about our personal connections to Transcendental beliefs and their influence on American society as a whole.

Today, we read and discussed background information about Washing Irving. Then, we read and discussed his short story, "The Devil and Tom Walker." As we read, we worked on and discussed literary analysis questions pertaining to the text, we will continue reading this story, in class tomorrow.
Today, we read and discussed background information about Nathaniel Hawthorne. Then, we read and discussed his short story, "The Minister's Black Veil." Students completed the literary analysis questions (1-7) in complete sentences. See Mrs. Crandall for further details.
