Today, we began class with a "Notable Quotable" warm-up exercise, in which we recorded and discussed a famous quote that we can highlight and add to our writer's toolbox. Today's quote is by Ralph Waldo Emerson: "The highest bribes of society are at the feet of the successful orator. All other fames must hush before his." This quote helped us to segue nicely into our class discussion and notes on rhetorical analysis. Students took notes on "Ethos" from Heinrich's Thank You for Arguing." Then, students continued taking notes of "rhetorical analysis" from a PowerPoint created at Auburn University. After lunch, students unpacked the AP Rhetorical Analysis Rubric, by coming up with a 13 word sentence to describe each score. Students also began analyzing samples, assigning scores, and providing score rationales. We will continue this activity in class tomorrow.
