At the beginning of class, students worked with a partner to complete the "T-Chart" portion of the Native American Assimilation Annotation Assignment. The entire class engaged in a discussion, based on their analyses of the texts, and Mrs. Crandall collected student work. Next, the class began taking guided notes on the "Tips for Writing an Outstanding Essay" PowerPoint. Then, the class discussed "tone" and "diction," and read Walt Whitman's "I Hear America Singing" and Langston Hughes' "I, Too, Sing America," and students were instructed to annotate, circle diction that lend to the tone. Students were also introduced to their Socratic Seminar Graphic Organizer and instructed to complete the organizer for the above-mentioned poems.
